I'm a doctor in Tallahassee thinking about getting involved with bee-keeping. A patient of mine, a professional bee-keeper, told me to forget about it. That's because I have a "salt" pool. The bees would potentially be kept 15 yards away. He said they would be attracted to the pool water and it would kill them. People around my house also like to sunbathe. Please confirm if these issues are problematic.
Thanks, Ron.
Ron, my initial reaction is that would only make sense if there are no other fresh water sources available to the bees. Bees are drawn to chlorinated pools as it seems that might help them with digestive issues. I'm sure you could easily provide a year-round bird bath or other water supply for a hobbyist beekeeper set up. Perhaps providing water on a commercial scale is more challenging I'm also thinking that if saltwater kills bees there would be no bees in the Caribbean islands and yet there are.
Hi Melanie. Thank you so much for the response. I am wanting to get my feet wet and start a setup. Is there a article you recommend that is good for getting started? Thanks
